Motorcycle racing is increasingly popular in the UK & Ireland. Unfortunately (but unsurprisingly) racing carries with it the risk of severe injury. Despite ever increasing attempts to make tracks safer and protective equipment more effective, injury will never be eliminated. Therefore there will always be a need for medical personnel to be in attendance at these events.
Racetrack injuries may be
minor or fatal, involve one rider or many. It is not
uncommon for spectators and track personnel to be injured.
For this reason it is important to have medical staff who
are skilled, not only in the immediate management of
traumatic injuries, but are also aware of the unique
hazards of working in the racetrack environment. Treating
an unconscious rider, facedown in a gravel trap in the rain
is very different to seeing an A&E patient lying on a
trolley with drip in situ, bloods sent and monitoring
attached!
The website is mainly concerned with "Short Circuits" i.e
track racing. Other forms of racing have their own
idiosyncrasies. The pages on Speedway
and Motocross
have been submitted by
doctors who have knowledge and experience in these fields
(and are FIM certified Chief Medical Officers)
