Head Injury Guidelines
Below are guidelines on when to return to
competitive motor cycle sport after a head injury.
These have been issued by the ACU Medical Panel to
Chief Medical Officers at all British motorcycle
venues. [Based on Kelly et al, JAMA 266, 2867-2869,
1991].
Grade 1 Mild
Any loss of consciousness
No LOC but any Post traumatic amnesia
Grade 3 Severe
Grade 2 Moderate
No
Loss of consciousness.
no post traumatic amnesia or retrograde amnesia.
A brief period of mild confusion/disorientation resolved in 15 minutes
no post traumatic amnesia or retrograde amnesia.
A brief period of mild confusion/disorientation resolved in 15 minutes
Hospitalise
Suspend for 1 month
Return when asymptomatic at rest and after exercise for 1 week & normal neurological and neuropsychiatric evaluation including early CT/MRI
Suspend for 1 month
Return when asymptomatic at rest and after exercise for 1 week & normal neurological and neuropsychiatric evaluation including early CT/MRI
Hospitalise
Suspend for a 7 day minimum
Back after normal neurological and neuropyschiatric evaluation
Suspend for a 7 day minimum
Back after normal neurological and neuropyschiatric evaluation
Consider possible
return that day
